Background

Committee Background

Starting in 2005, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, First Nations Summit, BC Assembly of First Nations and BC Council of Treaty 8 Chiefs passed resolutions in support of the creation of a BC Specific Claims Committee. Initially, the BC-SCC was formed to coordinate our organizations' respective activities in opposing Bill C-6, the Specific Claims Resolution Act and to share information on recent court cases that could negatively affect specific claims in BC.

It was also intended that the committee enhance the representation and effectiveness of BC First Nations at the national level, since we are underrepresented on the AFN Chiefs Committee on Claims. (The BC-SCC operates independently of the AFN-CCC, so that policy reform initiatives critical for settling specific claims in BC are carried forward on an urgent, consistent basis. Activities of the BC-SCC at the regional and national levels are intended to supplement the work carried out by the AFN-CCC whenever possible.) Click here to read the BC SCC Terms of Reference.
